Victory or Defeat?

Oregroanian Mar 11, 2007 page A1: Bold Headlines proclaim, “Global Warming fight brings local victory.” It is followed with the statement that Oregonians benefit as the state leads in offsetting greenhouse gases. They touted synchronizing the traffic signals and how much gas that will save Oregonians. What about the gas wasted by using cars with 4-wheel drive and automatic transmissions. Both of these conveniences boost gas use over a 2-wheel stick shift by greater than 30%. What about the driving with headlights on during the day? The energy required by that wasted illumination comes directly out of the gas tank. Not my problem.

Buried on page D8 is a small two-paragraph note, which quietly points out that “the rising demand for ethanol has reportedly doubled the cost of corn.” Corn as you may know feeds much of the world. Either through livestock feed or even more directly in cornmeal and other staples of the third world companies. Oregon can certainly be proud that they are reducing greenhouse gasses by making food more expensive.

Be proud Oregon you have forced a power plant builder to donate $533,000 to synchronize streetlights, while ignoring any discomfort to yourselves and oh by the way increasing the hunger and poverty in the rest of the world. Not our problem.
